3) Review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below.
RVLL Umpiring FAQs:
WHO CAN UMPIRE?
- All RVLL community members who are league-age 12 and up are encouraged to apply.
- RVLL community members who are league-age 11 and playing in Minors or above are also encouraged to apply.
WHAT TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED?
All prospective umpires must attend both a field training and a rules training, regardless of previous experience (limited exceptions may be considered). The rules training is online, and field training is in-person. We encourage everyone to attend the rules training live, but those who cannot may view a recording after-the-fact.
- D35's 60' rules webinar (for Majors and below) will be February 25 and 26 at 7:00 p.m. D35's 90' rules webinar (50/70 and above) will be March 11 and 12 at 7:00 p.m.
- March 21, 2026, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Mark West LL: D35 Adult Umpire Field Clinic (Age 18+)
- March 28, 2026, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at RVLL: D35 Youth Umpire Field Clinic (Age 17 and under)
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO BUY?
You don't need to buy anything; RVLL provides all necessary tools and equipment, including shin guards, chest protectors, face masks, and indicators ("clickers"). But you may use your own equipment if you like.
HOW MUCH DOES UMPIRING PAY?
- Youth plate umpires ages 14-17: $40 per game.
- Youth base umpires ages 14-17: $30 per game.
- Youth plate umpires ages 11-13: $30 per game.
- Youth base umpires ages 11-13: $25 per game.
Youth umpires also get a free beverage and food item from the snack shack after their game.
Adult umpires (18 and over), including our D35 umpires, are typically volunteers (uncompensated). Volunteer adult umpires from the RVLL community keep the league affordable for kids and their families.
CAN I UMPIRE WITH MY CHILD, PARENT, OR OTHER PARTNER?
Umpire pairs are encouraged and accommodated whenever possible, especially when the pair includes a youth umpire and his or her parent/guardian. To register as a pair, each member of the pair should complete the registration form below, noting the name and email address of the other member of the pair where indicated.
WHEN AND WHERE CAN I SIGN UP FOR GAMES?
REGISTERED UMPIRES will receive sign-up links approximately one week before opening day.
